Kalpa
"Kalpa" is a Tibetan Buddhist concept, referring to infinity, or an interminable duration. Its actual definition is the amount of time it takes a celestial being to wear away a stone of 10 cubic miles if she were to brush it with her garment once every 3 years.
Beginning in March of 2007, I am commencing a Kalpa. I have chosen to destroy the Island of San Miguel (slightly larger and 10 cubic miles) by brushing it with my garment once every three years. The piece will exist as a repetitive performance and pilgrimage. It will be documented by tattoo on my body so that in death, no trace of the performance remains except any incurred destruction. This work connotes a necessity in engaging with futility and the practice and cultivation of patience. It uses pilgrimage, duration and repetition to expand a project? conclusion is timed precisely to correspond with the moment of my inevitable demise.
