The Garage
The Garage has been in operation since 2004 under the direction of Justin Hoover. In essence, the Garage is a “meta-contextual” sculpture, established to overcome a focus on the nature of objecthood and to embrace the conceptual nature of collected energy dedicated to artistic play.
The purpose of the Garage is to restructure the cultural values concerning the hierarchy of beliefs to which we either subscribe, revolt from or complacently accept. The Garage seeks to give reason to a space for a purpose other than its original intention, thus meta-contextualizing the space itself and more importantly, the relationships of the people involved. Art has become a process of recontextualization. However, the Garage seeks to destroy recontexualization through meta-contextualization. By changing our relationship to the space itself and to each other, we provide meaning and reason to the simple act of being thereby enabling play for play’s sake.
