The individual sense of “I” is inherently connected to a communal sense of “we”. The Garage explores this idea of individual and collective identity through I IS WE – Public Residency in Private Space. By establishing a temporary residency program in a private residence for one week in November, the Garage will investigate the need within creative practice for both contemplation and community, while scrutinizing how displacement from one’s familiar surroundings for an intensive period of time can foster openness and exploration. Six artists have been invited to each reside at The Garage for a 24-hour residency, with a seventh day designated as the opening of a group show documenting their experiences. This body of work will be simultaneously on view at the Garage and Mission 17 Gallery as part of their Anti/Social exhibition, also opening December 1.
The Garage Residency Program features innovative work by emerging Bay Area artists who address issues of presence and representation through performance, video, sound, and mixed-media. The Residency Fellows include Patricia Esquivias, Peter Foucault, Zac Starer, Zefrey Throwell, Nyuk-Mei Wong, Katherine Worel, and Justin Hoover, founder of The Garage, and co-curator of the Residency Program in conjunction with Patricia Maloney.
